The Kansas City Kansas Community Orchestra held their annual Driveway Concert in Shawnee, KS this past Thursday, June 12. Our conductor’s driveway was filled with musicians and their gear, and his yard was a colorful display of lawnchairs, blankets, dogs, and people – all sprawled out to enjoy an evening of music. The weather could not have been more perfect AND it was superbly timed to have us on the shady side of the house! After a great concert mix of show tunes, big band music, some classic pieces, marches, and a little bit of other, we were ready to stow away the instruments and music to hit the food! What a spread – if anyone left hungry, we have no pity. Talk about a treat! We’re already looking forward to next year’s Driveway Concert!!
Orchestra Members, please make sure to leave your music folder with someone in your section if you know you will not be at the next week’s rehearsal or the next concert. Several people attended rehearsal last night that didn’t have any music to play because someone else had the folder they share. We did enjoy their humming, singing, and sound effects immensely, but there were some missing notes.
Great rehearsal last night; lots of new pieces to read through. Make sure you mark your calendars now for a Mini-Concert on Friday, June 6 in Overland Park; Jeff will get all the details to us soon. Also mark your planners for the Driveway Concert – yes!! – on Thursday, June 12. More details to follow on that one also.
We’ve been rehearsing since January, it’s time to perform! Your first opportunity to hear what we’ve been working on will be March 29th at Nebraska Furniture Mart. Check the Event Calendar often as more appearances will be added soon. And please plan to attend our Spring Concert and Silent Auction. If you have an item you’d like to donate to the Silent Auction, contact the Orchestra. This is our only fund-raising project for the year.
Rehearsals begin January 9th at 6:30PM at London Heights Baptist Church, 734 N. 78th Street, Kansas City, KS.
2014 should be a banner season for the Orchestra. We are growing and several new members filling critical needs should be joining us in January.
And with the donation of the McCoy Orchestra Library, we will have the opportunity to visit literally several hundred works that haven’t been recently performed.
It’s an exciting time. If you play or want to play, consider joining us. We appreciate your support. Please remember we are a 501 C 3 organization and you can make a monetary donation to the Orchestra using the PayPal link.
The Orchestra held a pancake breakfast fund-raiser at Applebees of the Legends on September 14, 2013. 114 people were served!
Since we’re always “in session,” it’s hard to break down our year into “seasons,” but a convenient spot is our last concert of the summer, which happened on July 21st at Nebraska Furniture Mart. Now we begin rehearsals for the fall/winter concert season.
What do you have to look forward to? A lawn concert at the Bingham-Waggoner Estate in Independence. A formal “fund-raiser” concert in the early fall. Christmas concerts at London Heights and KCK City Hall.
And, while we won’t be performing with instruments, join us for our fund-raising pancake breakfast at Applebee’s of the Legends on September 14.
All of our events are on our Event Calendar and will be on our Facebook page. And as always, we’re looking for musicians. String players, we know you’re out there. Dust off those bows and join in on the fun.
The Kansas City Kansas Community Orchestra is not affiliated with the Unified Government of KCK/Wyandotte County or Kansas City Kansas Community College.
My purpose for forming the orchestra was to allow students and community members the opportunity to play in a “full orchestra” setting. Many individuals stop playing after completing school and later want to pick up their instrument again. That is where we come in!
